Every time I travel to a new country or even a new city here in Turkey, I feel so excited for trying all those new dishes and desserts of course, and this is why in this new blog, I would like to introduce you to the other different desserts, you can find every time you come to Turkey or even to Istanbul. Because, believe it or not, when we think about Turkey and its desserts and dishes. Usually, the first one to come to our mind is baklava, But of course there are many other desserts that we can choose from and they are so delicious too.
1. BAKLAVA
It wouldn't be a dessert list without the famous baklava, would it? So, this is why every time we think about Turkey one of the first things that come to our mind is the baklava.
Why? Because this is one of the most famous and traditional dishes here in this country.
Now there are many many types of baklava and flavors and everything but the most famous ones are the "cevizli" baklava, which is the Walnut baklava or the fistikli baklava which is made with pistachios. Right now we have chosen one which is the pistachio baklava and we will try it.
But as well, I recommend you keeping an eye out for many to those other variations of baklava, we have here because each one of them are delicious and it definitely worth trying them, if you have the time.
2. KADAYIF
We have this other traditional dessert which is called Kadayif. This one is made of Shredded fried wheat and this one is very traditional here as well, and we can find them filled up with Pistachio and with many other things so there are big variations of this dessert, you will find them mostly anywhere in Turkey, in Istanbul, and this one we recommend as well trying it.
This one is with pistachio and this one is one of our favorites.
3. ŞEKERPARE
Şekerpare is another traditional and one of the most loved desserts from Turkish families. These ones we will find them in every single Turkish house because, it is very easy, affordable to make and also very delicious. So, this one it's as well once the dough is fully cooked, the main characteristic of this dessert is that it will be soaked with hot sugar syrup So the taste will be very very sweet only with one piece will be more than enough for you to try this delicious pastry and also, they will put one almond on top of the dough. So this one it's also very good.
4. TULUMBA
The tulumba is another famous dessert in Turkey and this one consists in a fried dessert, and after that they put some hot sugar syrup as well this one is eaten mostly cold. These are very similar to the Spanish churros, except that instead of chocolate. They will be soaked with sugar syrup and this one at the same time even though they are fried their consistency is very good, because it has all at the same time It is crispy, soft, juicy and super sweet.
4. AŞURE
Aşure is another very traditional Turkish dessert here, and The word Aşure means the Noah's Ark pudding. This one is a mixture of dried fruits, legumes, juice, fruits and also sugar the legend says that, When Noah was in the ark there was little food to feed all the passengers. So, they tried to mix up all the food they they still had left and they put it into into a pudding into a mix to feed everyone in the Ark, and They keep them full until they finally arrived to Mount Ararat in Turkey. This desert is also associated to Ashura tradition, which is celebrated just a few days before the Ramadan and It consists in the Muharram month. Aşure isn't just a dessert. It is a symbol of sharing, love, but most importantly it represents our life together.
5. Sütlaç
The sütlaç is another Turkish dessert and this one it's very famous as well this one consists in a rice milk and even cinnamon. The special thing about this dessert is that it's Put into an oven. So, this is what gives the special taste to this one because on top of the dessert some sort of a burnt leathery skin comes on top, and that's what gives also a very delicious Flavor and underneath, we can find the creamy pudding. As well, on topping it can be served with some walnuts and it will enhance its flavor.
Now I will show you the consistency of this dessert and we will understand what I'm talking about. I will break up this leathery skin and then you can see the pudding Underneath and this one is one of my favorite parts of the sütlaç. This skin gives a special and unique flavor, taste.
6. Künefe
This dessert is one of my favorite ones in Turkey and this one is called the künefe. This one its original recipe comes from Hatay, which is a city in the Southeast part of Turkey, but many people also claim that the original recipe comes from other cities in the nearby areas such as a Mersin, Gaziantep, Şanlıurfa among others, but each one of them have their own variations, and they are very unique and delicious at the same time. This dessert is also known in many other countries Such as Greece, Egypt and some other Arabic countries and believe it or not, this is one of the most difficult desserts to prepare on our own at home. The process is very long, and also we need special Special things in order to do it properly.
As you can see here we have this grey pot or pan and without this we cannot make it. Its main ingredients are kaday, if which also we we already show you in another dessert and Cheese, cheese is the is the main one and this one also if you want you can. You can put on top some Pistachio some Kaymak, this Kaymak is a sweet cream. In Turkey or even ice cream with ice cream during summer, It gives a refreshing taste to it.
7. AYVA TATLISI
This ayva tatlısı it's a winter time dessert, and this one also is very loved by the Turkish people and this one is made from this fruit called "quince." Which comes from the same family from the pear and apples. This one comes from poaching the quince in sugar and water and as well in order to enhance its flavor they add cloves and cinnamon.
This fruit (quince) is native to Mesopotamia and after spreading to the ancient Greek Areas, and also to other places here in Turkey. It finally spread to every corner in the world.
8. Tavuk göğsü
This is another interesting dessert and this one is called tavuk göğsü, which literally in English means a chicken breast and yes, just as you're thinking this one is made from chicken breast, but don't worry because you won't be able to taste or even smell that special smell from chicken. All you'll be able to taste will be that sweet creamy pudding and with cinnamon you love it when this one actually dates back from the Ottoman Empire. When the cooks from the Sultans used to do it, for the sultans and their guests in the palace.
As well, there is one legend on how these dessert was created. If this is true or not, we have no idea but this is something that it's told from this dessert. One day one sultan was craving for a dessert and in the palace, in the kitchen. They didn't have any ingredients to make this dessert. So, what they did they only had chicken and some other few ingredients and they try to mix them all together and voila. They came up with this dessert. So let's try to keep these curios facts about this one. So, as you could see these were some of the options for desserts that you can try while in Turkey. There are many many many others that you can try and it's almost impossible to cover them all, But these are some of the favorites for the Turkish families and also from the foreigners.
